English & French - “FAGGOT” / “FAGOT”
The exact origin is not clearly scientifically proven. According to the most popular theory, the word has its origins in Latin. “faggot” originally means “bundle of sticks”. It was used in the 16th century as a derogatory, vulgar word for (mostly) elderly women and widows who earned their living by collecting firewood. Similar to SISSY or FAIRY, FAGGOT was eventually used for homosexual men to reference their obvious lack of masculinity.
German - “SCHWUCHTEL”
In today's language, SCHWUCHTEL has a striking similarity to the word "schwül" (humid / muggy), which describes an oppressive, warm, humid climate. There are two popular theories for its actual origin. “Schwuchteln” is an old German word that means bouncing around or dancing with the hips. Obviously it refers to the feminine body language that many faggots have. According to the second theory, the word comes from Silesian, where SCHWUCHTEL is a name for a chatty woman who gossips around. Here, too, it is clear why this term, originally used for women, began to be applied to homosexual men at some point.
Italian - “FROCIO”
According to some sources, the word FROCIO comes from ancient Rome, where there was a well near a blacksmith shop that was known as a meeting place for homosexual men. According to another theory, this was the name for particularly ruthless soldiers who raped people during the sack of Rome in the 16th century, regardless of whether the victims were female or male. FROCIO comes from the name of the red noses that the soldiers had because they were often drunk while raping men. The term then spread in the 1950s where it was used in many Italian movies and novels.
Spanish - “MARICÓN”:
The word MARICÓN is derived from the female first name “María”, which in Spain is a symbol of women due to the widespread use of the name. MARICÓN was first used in Spanish literature at the end of the 16th century to describe a feminine-looking and behaving man. In addition to its current use as a slur for homosexual men and women, the term is also used to describe "malicious" people in general.
